In many ways, massage is the most natural of remedies. Touching your body where it
hurts is a basic instinct, like running from danger or eating when  hungry. And many
experts say that massage, with specific techniques, can be a very powerful healer

acupressure is a form of bodywork based in traditional Chinese meridian theory in which acupuncture points are pressed to stimulate the flow of energy or chi.

aroma therapy, the use of naturally occurring essential oils to enhance treatment. Often used as a treatment in them-
selves with different oils being applied to different parts of the body. Pure essential oils have great healing properties and we
will have some pages on them in the near future.

aston patterning, another offshoot of Rolfing, was developed to teach people to maintain the improved alignment that
they got through Rolfing. Aston-Patterning uses posture re-education and stresses physical fitness techniques.

craniosacral therapy focuses on the skull and spinal column. Therapists use very gently pressure no more than the
weight of a nickel to massage the bones, membranes and fluids that support and bathe your skull and spinal column. The theory is that these manipulations will reduce tension and counteract any physical trauma you may have experienced to
your head over the years.

deep tissue massage targets chronic tension in muscles that lie far below the surface of your body. You have five
layers of muscle in your back, for instance, and while Swedish massage may help the first couple of layers, it won't do much directly for the muscle underneath. Deep muscle techniques usually involve slow strokes, direct pressure or friction
movements that go across the grain of the muscles. Massage therapists will use their fingers, thumbs or occasionally even elbows to apply the needed pressure.

eroticity therapy opens you up to the possibilities of this radiating energy. Each session lasts one hour and you will be guided to tune into your own eroticity through light sensual touching on my part and deep regulated breathing on yours as you're laying down. The focus is for you to go inward and meditate on the wondrous sensations. This is not to be confused
with a conventional erotic massage. Your goal is not to experience a brief local release (which can be a bonus) but to enjoy
the much more intense and expanded pleasures of this full-body erotic energy.
Both Taoist and Tantric philosophies advocate applying this erotic energy toward spiritual and physical well-being. My therapy draws on these practices to help you feel
more centered (and energized) throughout the day.

feldenkrais treats every body as an individual work of art, with different postures and different movement patterns. Prac-tioners seek to teach their clients ideal patterns of movement through slow, gentle, exercise-like sessions. It also includes a gentle massage that is designed to teach a person how to expand his range of motion. Bienenfeld says it's often useful for victims of stroke or accidents who have lost movement.

hellerwork is an offshoot of Rolfing that adds both mental and movement re-education to the physical work. In a series of
11 sessions, you get instruction on how to break bad posture habits and you also get a massage that focuses on returning
your muscles and other tissue to their proper positions. The result can be dramatic. "Sometimes we can greatly increase the spaces in your joints to the point where you may grown three-fourths of an inch taller before you're done," Bienenfeld says.

myofascial massage
Myo means muscle and fascia is the elastic connective tissue wrapped around muscles and other parts of the body. During myofascial release, restrictions (stuck areas) are located and gentle sliding pressure is applied in the direction of the restriction to stretch the tissues. The stretching of tissues and the heat imparted by the practitioner's hands are thought to help produce a softer consistency of fascial tissues.

neuromuscular massage
is a form of deep tissue massage that is applied to individual muscles. It is used to increase blood flow, reduce pain and release pressure on nerves caused by injuries to muscles and other soft tissue. Neuromuscular massage helps release trigger points, intense knots of tense muscle can also "refer" pain to other parts of the body. Relieving
a tense trigger point in your back, for example, could help ease pain in your shoulder or reduce headaches.

okazaki restorative massage
Professor Okazaki's style of "seifukujitsu" utilizes deep tissue massage.  This became known as his "famous elbow method" in that 90% of the massage is done with the crux of the elbow.  This style of massage is said to have originated from Hawaiian lomi-lomi massage, Swedish massage (popular at that time period) and Japanese massage. Restoration therapy has been practiced in Japan for over fifteen hundred years, and has proven very successful in the treatment of migraine headaches, nervous tension, general fatigue, muscular aches and pains and other specific disorders.

orthopedic massage addresses chronic pain and sports injury conditions with emphasis on knowing the underlying causes and pathology of each condition.  Focus is on the entire body, with emphasis on restoring pain free joint range of motion throughout the body and integrating complete structural balance. Goes far beyond the traditional clinical sports massage training by addressing all the common medical and orthopedic conditions found in most clients.  Pain is released by combining sequences of functional assessment, myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, frictioning, muscle energy, stretching, neuromuscular re-education, structural balancing, patient home care, and much more. The combination of these techniques obtains immediate and permanent results in even the most challenging and complicated clients.

reflexology
is a form of bodywork based on the theory of zone therapy, in which specific spots of the body are pressed to stimulate corresponding areas in other parts of the body.  Foot reflexology is the most common form of reflexology.

reiki
is a Japanese word pronounced "ray-kee" and means "Universal Life Energy" or Chi.  Reiki is believed to date back to early Tibetan healing practices. Discovered in the 1800's by a Japanese philosopher and Christian seminary educator, Dr. Mikao Usui, Reiki was brought to the United States in the mid-1900s. As an energy healing technique, Reiki involves hands-on touch and visualization applied to the entire body, serving to align chakras and bring healing energy to organs and glands. The practitioner, trained to access and serve as a channel for the life energy, uses a passive touch which some clients experience with a warmth or tingling.

rolfing seeks to re-educate your body about posture. When posture is poor, Bienenfeld says, it can be reflected in a
number of health problems, such as backaches, headaches and joint pain. Rolfing seeks to realign and straighten your body
by working the myofascia, the connective tissue that surrounds your muscles and helps hold your body together. The ten-session, head-to-toe Rolfing program used to be rather painful, but Bienenfeld says new techniques that employ a therapist's hands and elbows are quite tolerable and just as effective at improving your posture.

shiatsu
(Japanese for "finger pressure") is a system for healing and health maintenance that has evolved over thousands of years. Shiatsu derives both from the ancient healing art of acupuncture and from the traditional form of Japanese massage, amma. The goal of each of the different types of Shiatsu being practiced, Zen shiatsu, tsubo point therapy, shiatsu massage, and water shiatsu, is balancing energy flow.

sports massage
is designed to help you train better, whether you're a world champion or a weekend warrior. The tech- niques are similar to those in Swedish and deep tissue massage, but Greene says sports massage has been adapted to
meet the athlete's special needs. Pre-event massage can help warm up muscles and improve circulation before competition, but it can also energize or relax an athlete and help him focus on the competition. Post-event massage can push waste products out of the body and improve recovery.

swedish massage uses soothing, tapping and kneading strokes to work the entire body, relieving muscle tension and loosening sore joints. Swedish massage therapists use five basic strokes, which anyone can learn and use on themselves
and others. They are effleurage (stroking); petrissage (muscles are lightly grabbed and lifted); friction (thumbs and fingertips work in deep circles into the thickest part of muscles; tapotement (chopping, beating, and tapping strokes); and vibration (fingers are pressed or flattened firmly on a muscle, then the area is shaken rapidly for a few seconds).

tantric massage
usually a sensual massage whereby the therapist assists you to understand and control or re-direct energy. A basic understanding and acceptance of the human aura and energy centers is advisable before taking this
treatment (although some therapists within the sex industry use this term for sensual - sexual massage without any real knowledge of what tantra is, as it is a trendy concept). With a qualified therapist it can be of great benefit toward liberation
of body, mind and spirit.

trager
work (or Trager Psychophysical Integration) uses gentle, rocking massage to help release the body's harmful "holding patterns." If you injured your left shoulder as a child, for example, you still may unconsciously carry it lower than your right shoulder, throwing your body off balance and robbing you of energy. Therapists employ very light, gentle shaking techniques that are unlike traditional Swedish-style massage. The idea is to make people more aware of their bodies, especially the way they move and hold themselves. For some reason, freeing people of physical holding patterns also seems to rid them of emotional stress that they associated  with the prior injury.

trigger point massage utilizes ischemic compression of individual areas of hypersensitivity in muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia. These trigger points are defined by their referral of pain to distant locations in muscles, connective tissues, and organs.
